Regional Finals: Game 18, @ STA vs. SM South

Regional Finals: Game 18, @ STA vs. SM South

The Saints 17th Regional Title in 20 attempts came quickly as the girls played about as well as they can play in that first half against a solid SM South team.  Despite missing 3 point blank goals in the opening 4 minutes, we did go on to put 5 on the board before half.

And it was a story of constant attack and creativity on the offensive side of the ball. BWhite named Kutey and Pyle as co-BWhite Players of the Match.  They played marvelously off each other and within the flow that our center midfielders created.

We took 18 shots in the first half to South's 2, and we generated 6 corner kicks.  This was an important half for us after the long layoff with the bye against a team that had knocked off both BV North and Olathe East and that was coming off a 9-0 blanking of Topeka West.

We know what awaits us on Tuesday, a rematch of last year's state quarterfinal against BV Southwest.  The winner gets blown to McPherson for the final four.  It will be quite a match.

16:32 Kutey (This slick pass from Pyle to Kutey demonstrates the duo at their best)
15:15 Pyle (Sweeney remarkably keeps this ball in play and diagonally forward to Pyle. Watch Pyle change gears. Wow!)
2:28 Sweeney (Pyle slides the ball to Sweeney back post)

Second Half:  Saints: 6 (3) Corners: 5

State Quarters: Game 19, @STA vs. BV Southwest

State Quarterfinals: Game 19, @STA vs. Blue Valley Southwest

If you take out the first nine minutes tonight we lost 2-1, but boy were we good in those opening nine minutes, scoring three very nice goals to grab a 3-0 lead.

It all started with our new revamped kickoff play that basically got us into position to push Pyle to goal -- less than 30 seconds in.  Sweeney then found Meyers and then Kutey from her baseline home, and before you knew it, we were up three.

But as predicted, Southwest did not quit.  In fact they came inches away from making the match 3-2 just before half, but Loughman came up with a great save to keep them at one.  Pyle then came back deep in the midfield to win a ball before getting it to Olivia who threaded a great through ball that took Jamie 60 yards to goal.  So we exited the half with a 4-1 lead.

And there it stood until Eldridge hit a late deadball pop up that cleared Kutney to end the match at 4-2.

BWhite once again went with the Kutey-Pyle combo as the BWhite Players of the Match.  I would have to give a big-time shoutout for Olivia Meyers who was part of all 4 goals and who did a nice job winning the middle of the field tonight.

We got great minutes from Anne Poelzl tonight in the second half at center midfield as well.  In fact second half we were much better defensively and throughout the middle of the field than we were first half.

We beat a very, very good team tonight.  We just flat outscored them.

It is certainly an honor to return to the final four for our 10th straight year, and to have the opportunity to win a 4th consecutive state title. It will all start with Bishop Carroll on Friday night, and then we will take on the winner of Mill Valley and undefeated Valley Center if we can get by Carroll.

We have to give a shout out to fellow EKL quarterfinal winners BV Northwest and BV North.  The EKL is certainly flexing its muscle for postseason.

State Semis: Game 20 @McPherson vs. Bishop Carroll

State Semi-Finals: Game 20 @McPherson vs. Bishop Carroll

Despite wasting most all of the first half with the wind, we did get a huge goal just before half. The BWhite Player of the Match, Molly Schmidt, carried the ball from the back line to just underneath the front line (after two charring tackles) before finding Sweeney wide who then one-touched it to Kutey who punched it by the keeper as their back made a last ditch effort to clear it off the line. Nope.

Second half we played some very good soccer, owning most all of the possession. We were our dangerous selves.  We missed a couple of bunnies, had a goal called back, shot 3-4 over the bar, but the point was, we were holding possession and generating some great opportunities.

Olivia Meyers just had a great match in the middle of the field, and with Maddie and Dizzy playing so well in the second half, we had our midfield in sync, and that really made the difference. Annie gave us some big minutes in the first half when we really needed to win the center of the field.

Lough had a great save in the second half to keep the score at 2-0.  That was really Carroll's only real opportunity, but it was a good one. But Molly Schmidt and her center back buddy, Natalie, did a nice job overall in the center disallowing anything serious.

We played Wichita's best tonight for the 3rd straight year in a row in the State Semi's. Nice seeding.  I love the grit Carroll plays with.  They make you earn everything that you get.

Now we have it all in front of us, one more win and we will have done this four times in a row.  Now, we will have to give Valley Center its first loss of the season as they stand 20-0.  But if we play like we did in the second half, we will do this.

STATS:
First Half: STA: Shots: 10 (2) Corners: 5

1:26 Kutey (Schmidt dispossesses them then finds Sweeney who finds Jamie)

Carroll: Shots: 2 (0) Corners: 0

Second Half:
STA: Shots: 13 (7)  Corners: 5

27:51 Meyers (direct kick bent in)

BC: Shots: 1 (1) Corners: 0

Corners: (Kutey 5, Pyle, Bride, Sweeney, Meyers, Kern)
Shots: (Kutey 6, Pyle 5, Disidore 3, Meyers 2, Sweeney 2, Kwap 2, Bride, Reynolds 1)

State Finals: Game 21 @McPherson vs. 20-0 Valley Center

State Finals: Game 21 vs. 20-0 Valley Center

The 'Toast of McPherson'

This Derby had a clear favorite once we got blown to McPherson, KS. The State Final figuratively took place last Tuesday at STA, but we took the field at a few minutes after 2:00 Saturday to take on the best of the Southwest, undefeated at 20-0, Valley Center in 27 MPH wind, for it was windy, baby.

Going against that wind in the first half did add some drama and competitive zeal to state final.  The game stayed knotted at 0-0 until about the 20 minute mark.  Then Hannah Kwapiszeski (The BWhite Player of the Match) sliced a beautiful diagonal ball to Kelly Sweeney who just made a great individual play to remove most of the drama, as we took the 1-0.

Once again, just a few minutes before half, Kutey scored on a ball from Hannah Pyle. (I am not sure who else around has a streak going of scoring a goal in every state playoff game she has ever played in, but Jamie stands at 6 and counting.) Taking that 2-0 lead into halftime against that wind took away any drama of who was going to win this state title.

But second half just became the living out of the final game of the season for the girls together.  They had come a long way this season, playing as tough a schedule as any girls' soccer team had played in STA history, winning (going undefeated) the league that placed its second and third place teams in the 6A state final, securing yet another TOP 25 finish in the country, and more importantly making sure its group of 10 great seniors would become only the second group of girls ever to win 4 titles and 4 years.

Coach Hammons should get a clear shoutout for the second half as his attention to detail for the girls to tweak and improve the throw-in play just before leaving for the windy city lead to three second half throw-in goals.

One of those goals came from the script of the soon-to-be movie: The Julie Bride Story. If you were at the senior dinner you know that Julie was at the 2006 state championship, also held at McPherson College, as a little girl watching Erin Ellefson hit the game-winning goal in double overtime, cementing her decision to come to Aquinas to play soccer some day.  And here we were back for her senior year in the State Final at the exact same spot.  That is movie stuff especially when she wheeled and laced one in with 26:18 left in the match.

The only other drama of the second half came from most of the back line coming forward to catch more of the action creating a great goal scoring opportunity in the final minute of the game, but Natalie Kutney came up with a big save to keep the the Hornets at zero.

We may have more coaches than required to run three teams, but I know each one of them has found a way to connect and improve the soccer experience of our girls. We thank them for a great season.

And as Coach Hammons says each one of those banners in the gym is the cover of a small book, and if you get real quiet, real quiet and you just listen those girls will come alive and tell you their story.  People are going to love hearing the story of the 2013 girls soccer team.

Goodbye to: Hannah Pyle, Adrienne Lister, Anna Hagenkord, Natalie Owens, Rachel Riggs, Natalie Kutney, Hannah Kwapiszeski, Abby Kern, Julie Bride and Libby Reazin.
